Dive Brief:

  • Following a recent funding round, Madison Reed has hired Brad Lande-Shannon as its new chief marketing officer, and it promoted Tyler Wozny to become its chief digital officer, according to a Friday press release.
  • Bringing prior experience at companies like Accenture and Birchbox, Lande-Shannon will manage the company’s marketing operations. Wozny, who joined the company in 2018 as senior vice president of digital, will now oversee Madison Reed’s digital product, product design and engineering divisions. Wozny previously oversaw mobile product at Sephora.
  • Michael Dubin, founder and former CEO Dollar Shave Club, and Stephanie Davis Michelman, global chief marketing officer of Benefit Cosmetics, will join the company’s board of directors.

Dive Insight:

Madison Reed is leaning on veterans with major brand experience to take the company to the next level. Before joining the beauty brand’s board, Davis Michelman previously held roles at companies like Lancôme, Nest and Bobbi Brown Cosmetics, and currently is a board member of M.M.LaFleur and Tivity Health. Besides participating in the $1 billion Unilever acquisition of Dollar Shave Club and overseeing its omnichannel expansion, Dubin advises Liquid Death Mountain Water and Made by Nacho, per the press release.

“It’s an honor to welcome Michael and Stephanie to Madison Reed’s Board of Directors. Early on, companies like Dollar Shave Club sparked my obsession with revolutionizing a CPG category. We found that opportunity in hair color – an equivalent gap in beauty for women – and I’m honored to have Michael and Stephanie join us in our journey,” Amy Errett, CEO and founder of Madison Reed, said in a statement.

Dubin’s appointment to Madison Reed’s board adds another connection between the two companies. In March, Madison Reed hired Jose Zuniga, previously the CFO of Dollar Shave Club, to serve as its CFO, where he will keep tabs on the company’s financial operations, data analytics and steer its expansion. In addition to Dollar Shave Club, Zuniga also had experience at Google, Yahoo and Overture.

As Madison Reed fills its executive leadership team, the company has also been raising capital to support its growth. In February 2021, it raised $52 million from True Ventures, Northwest Venture Partners, Comcast Ventures, Goldman Sachs and multiple other venture capital investors. Last month, the company went on to raise $33 million from Sandbridge Capital and rapper Jay-Z’s VC firm Marcy Venture Partners, and said it plans to deploy the $33 million to grow its omnichannel business. Madison Reed aims to open 80 Hair Color Bar locations by the end of 2022.
